It was a cold, white, fully masked, socially distanced Halloween. Par for the course in 2020!
Sam wanted to carve a jack o'lantern this year, which he hadn't asked to do in years. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of carving pumpkins, but it wasn't nearly as messy or as hard as I remembered it being. The pumpkin had way less goo and slime than I thought it would, and it wasn't hard to carve it. All in all, it was actually fun! We also roasted the pumpkin seeds and they were delicious.
Sam designed the face. I think it was something from Roblox (his favorite video game).
I carved out the lid, and I remembered to do it with a little notch so that it wouldn't fall in. I was proud of myself.
The finished product! It's an upside down Roblox face.
Out on the front steps.
I actually kind of liked the Covid suggestion of having a table in front of your house with candy on it for trick-or-treaters to take instead of having the person-to-person interaction at the door. It saved me a lot of time and awkward interaction that sometimes happens. But I kind of missed it too. I love kids.
I covered up the piano bench with a Halloween tablecloth and spread the candy out on it with a little sign.
I thought the candy might all get grabbed up by greedy teenagers or kids but miraculously that didn't happen so as the evening wore on I amended the sign to take "one or two." I know, I'm so generous.
I even put a tealight candle in the jack o'lantern. I went all out this year.
The whole set-up. After I took this picture I noticed that the porch lights on the left were burnt out so I replaced them and planned to take another picture so that it looked its best, but I forgot.
Sam didn't want to go trick-or-treating unless his friend Alex went. It was looking iffy for awhile that day if Alex was going to go or not but fortunately he did. They wore Sam's food costumes. Cute!
Peter took them around the neighborhood. They were richly rewarded for braving the cold and the Covid--they got a ton of candy! I'm so glad that lots of people still participated. I wish I'd remembered to take a picture of them with their post-trick-or-treating candy stashes. It was definitely a weird Halloween, but just about everything about this year has been weird, so it wasn't too bad, all things considered! 🎃
